Who am I, anyway?

I guess this is the part of the page where I tell you all about who I am.  In case you're interested.  These things always seem so narcissistic to me, but here goes anyway.

I guess I'll start with my job.  I am a lab rat.  OK, not a lab RAT, but a lab tech.  I am an ASCP certified medical laboratory technician, and I work in a blood bank in an area hospital. It's a pretty exciting job at times, and other times I pretty much just sit and wait for something to happen.  But, it definitely pays the bills (which is pretty important while my husband finishes up his bachelor's degree).  Which brings me to my next role....

Cue the gratuitous wedding pics!
In December of 2010, I met the love of my life.  Three months into our relationship I went on a previously planned trip to Europe for two weeks.  That was all we both needed to know that we never wanted to be without each other again, and his apartment became our apartment the second my feet hit US soil again.  Three months later we decided to get married (yes, WE decided.  There was no big proposal.  Much like everything in our relationship, we were on the same page and just knew it was right).  A year later in June we were married.  We had a beautiful wedding, and continue to have a beautiful marriage.  Of all my roles, wife is my most favorite.  And he's a wonderful guinea pig for all of my kitchen creations. Most days, he pulls up a chair and keeps me company while I "invent".  We frequently yell insults at each other in terrible fake British accents a la Gordon Ramsay because we watch way too much Hell's Kitchen/Master Chef/Kitchen Nightmares (jokingly, of course).  He's even a good sport when one of my creations fails miserably and we have to order a pizza.  Ha! (I love you, baby!!!)

My other most favorite role is my role within my family.  I am one of the lucky ones who genuinely loves my family and willingly spends time with them.  And I'm fairly convinced I have the coolest parents ever.

I'm an animal lover.  No, really.  I brake for birds.  One time I hit one and pulled over, picked it up, cried, and found a little flower patch on the side of the road to lay him in.  Because of my ridiculous love of all creatures, we are the proud guardians of four cats, a bird, and many fish.

I am really goofy.  Even at inappropriate times sometimes.  I have the philosophy that you can find humor in almost anything, and that has helped me to get through a lot of tough stuff.

I watch way too much Food Network.  I have a dream of meeting Anthony Bourdain (and hanging out with him.  That guy is COOL!), Martha Stewart, and Ina Garten.  One of the highlights of my life was eating at the Mesa Grill in NYC and having Bobby Flay walk by me.  I almost choked on my perfectly prepared rib.

I'm not a picky eater, but I have certain foods that I love, and certain foods I HATE.  I love peanut butter.  Probably my favorite substance in the universe.  I am addicted to chocolate.  I think I eat some form of chocolate, even if it's a little bit, every single day.  I love coffee.  Don't even look at me until I have my morning cup.  I have a voracious sweet tooth.  Sometimes I think a bowl of really good soup is all you need to have a good day. If not for potatoes, I would probably die. Foods I hate?  Raisins.  I.  Hate.  Them.  I don't like walnuts in my desserts.  I really hate artificial grape flavor (have you ever eaten a grape that tastes like THAT!?!?!!).  I won't touch a banana the second it gets any brown spots. I'm allergic to oysters and clams.

Of course, I love to cook.  This started in my childhood with days in the kitchen with my Grandma.  I love my kitchen. I love pushing my limits and seeing what I can create.  Ironically, I can't boil an egg to save my life.  Or rice. Or make an omelette. But, I'm determined to overcome this!

I love my garden and my herb containers.  I love visiting our local orchards and farmer's markets.  The best food comes from fresh ingredients, in my opinion.  It is a very very rare thing to find me opening a box and adding water to ANYTHING.  I don't understand the concept of hamburger helper or box mac and cheese.  To me it is no more difficult to boil noodles, add stuff, and have real, actual food.  With that being said, I do have a weakness for Oreos.....

While I greatly enjoy my job, I would love nothing more than to make a living by opening a bakery or a farm stand.  Yes, I know, probably not likely.  But, a girl can dream, right?

My last observation?  Never cook angry.  I'm convinced you can taste anger in food.  Always love what you're making.  Your passion will come through and dinner will be AMAZING!!

If you've made it through these ramblings, congratulations!  You now know way too much about me.  Thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Krista "Not THAT Mrs" Smith
